Maus-tratos aos animais: expressão de sinais, carga alostática, consequências psiquiátricas e o direito à existência digna

Evidências recentes apontam que animais podem sofrer de transtornos mentais. Fatores como abandono, restrição da liberdade, estresse, trauma e abuso podem predispor ao aparecimento de doenças mentais nos indivíduos, tais como: depressão, transtorno do estresse pós-trauma, ansiedade e transtornos compulsivos. Na medicina veterinária esses transtornos são subdiagnosticados. Consequentemente, os animais vítimas de maus-tratos e traumas não recebem os cuidados médicos necessários e sofrem de distúrbios psicológicos extremos e debilitantes e simplesmente morrem em decorrência da carga alostática. Além disso, o agressor não tem uma pena compatível com o dano causado. A revisão é uma contribuição para o avanço dos estudos a respeito do reconhecimento e identificação dos transtornos psiquiátricos dos animais, e seu conteúdo se presta como alerta e encorajamento para os profissionais que atuam na melhoria do bem-estar animal.
